MMS 2016 Brewery Tour
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Are you coming into town for MMS 2016 Sunday and are looking for something to do?  Let’s kick off MMS properly by visiting what some would consider to be the finest taproom in the world, Surly Brewing.  Besides the outstanding beer and world class food the actual space itself is just awesome.  This will be a good time.

  • For those who can make it we have a private brewery tour scheduled at 4pm.
  • There is a public tour at 5pm as well, but that is first come first serve and limited to 20 people.

After the tour we will settle in the taproom for some food, drink and wonderful conversation.

For those wanting to make the 4pm tour, register for this session.  For those wanting the 5pm public tour, just get their early enough so that you're one of the 20 they let in.

Transportation options are Uber or Light Rail from MoA.

Light Rail:

  Blue Line to MPLS-Target Field
2:43 PM depart from MOA Transit Station
3:14 PM arrive at U.S. Bank Stadium Station

Green Line to St. Paul-Union Depot
3:20 PM depart from U.S. Bank Stadium Station
3:29 PM arrive at Prospect Park Station

Walk 0.38 miles NE to 520 MALCOLM AVE SE, MINNEAPOLIS, MN 55414

This is to make the 4pm tour!  If you can't make it that early, no worries.  Take the train when you can or grab an Uber and meet us there.  This scenic train ride will take us right by the new Vikings stadium. It's huge.  For those wanting to make the 4pm tour, meet me at the train station located at the Mall of America!  Also, follow me on Twitter for updates, @FredBainbridge.

MMS hAcKath0n Part 1 - Attendees Vote on What to Code
Limited Capacity seats available

You have a feeling that something you are doing can be done smarter, better, faster, easier. You have an idea about a tool you would love to see in any of the System Center products.  Well bring that idea and either Microsoft or Coretech will get a fix by the end of MMS. That's right, you can get your change to CM made right at MMS.

The Microsoft devs ran a hackathon at the MVP Summit last year that was widely successful.  Many changes are already in CM now or will be soon.  Representatives of the team will be here at MMS to repeat that success.  And where a fix might just not fit CM itself, the Coretech team will make it happen.

You can assist us now by thinking up ideas and submit them here.

The best ideas chosen will win a Surface Pro 4!

Attend the Part 2 session to see code results and winners.

Device Guard and AppLocker: Better Together
Limited Capacity seats available

Endpoint security in the enterprise can no longer be exclusive to just using antivirus software and firewalls.  There is growing interest in making endpoints more resilient to modern threats.  Device Guard and AppLocker in Windows 10 provide an effective "defense in-depth" solution to achieving this goal.

With Device Guard and AppLocker, you get application whitelisting and application control capabilities added to the endpoint security strategy.  So which is the right one to use, or can they be used simultaneously?  This session will take an investigative look at how to strike a balance when using both Device Guard and AppLocker in the Enterprise.

Everything you want to know about BIOS/UEFI Settings
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

BIOS and UEFI settings play an important role in today's systems management. Often times, new systems are built and go out the door without any changes or modifications to the default settings. In fact, if a model is deployed over a period of time then chances are there will be several different BIOS/UEFI versions floating around in the environment for the same model. Rarely do system administrators update the BIOS/UEFI after a system has been deployed.

Today, it is not only important to create a BIOS/UEFI standard for each supported hardware model but it is something that should be mandatory. Otherwise, new security features in Window 10 may not be possible without doing an expensive full wipe and load of the operating system.

In this session, you will learn how to report on and monitor using System Center Configuration Manager the BIOS/UEFI settings for each of the three major PC vendors: Dell, Lenovo and HP. We will show you which settings are important as it relates to the new Windows 10 security features and how to automatically set them using the right tools. This session with be packed with demos and provide you with the information you need in order to better manage the systems in your environment.

Everything you want to know about BIOS/UEFI Settings (Repeat Session)
Limited Capacity seats available

How do you ensure your users have not only their data but all the same apps they had before? Nobody likes the pain of having to return a new system to the usable state of the one it replaced

This session will cover tools, tips and methods for ensuring your users get their apps and data back. There are great third party solutions out there to help with this, but this session will show you to do it with free tools and licenses you likely already own. Technologies covered include User State Migration Tool (USMT), User Experience Virtualization (UE-V), Work Folders, and MDT Application Mapping.

Device Guard: How To Implement and Stay Out Of The News
Limited Capacity filling up

Securing endpoints against the bad guys takes work.  As attacks become more lethal, the risks increase.  Endpoint security needs to be modernized in order to meet the challenges.  It's not easy, but organizations have to start somewhere and Device Guard in Windows 10 is the best place to get started.  Although #DeviceGuard is not trending on Twitter, it is truly game-changing technology in endpoint security.

The system management professional can play a significant role in this effort, as there is already familiarity with some of the desktop and management technologies Device Guard leverages, for example: Hyper-V, UEFI & Secure Boot, ConfigMgr, Group Policy.  Like these technologies, Device Guard requires the system management professional be willing to refine and improve existing processes, and incorporate new ones into their operational practices.  Device Guard will accelerate the transformation already taking place in IT where the system management professional is becoming a strategic partner in Enterprise Security.

In this session, learn what it takes to implement Device Guard and help your organization Stay out of the News!!

PowerShell Community Content Guide: Separating the wheat from the chaff
Limited Capacity seats available

The PowerShell Gallery is the de facto standard for shared PowerShell content, and it contains hundreds of PowerShell modules and scripts.  Since anybody can contribute content to the Gallery now that it is no longer in preview mode, some content it offers will be great, and other content…not-so-much.  Not using this community content is simply not an option anymore, so how do you get the most value from it with the least amount of effort and risk?  What content is available that can offer you tangible value today?

This session will demonstrate the importance of the PowerShell Gallery and the related PowerShellGet module, discuss why you might want to stand up your own internal Gallery mirror in your organization, and walk you through some highly-useful content that is available in the Gallery today.

Session takeaway:

  1. Not using community content is not an option anymore.
  2. It's really easy to stand up a PowerShell repository in your organization.
  3. There is a ton of value to be realized in PowerShell versions 3, 4 and 5 by simply installing modules that are readily available on the PowerShell Gallery today.

Defeating Ransomware: Patching 3rd Party Apps in SCCM
Limited Capacity filling up

Most corporate environments today have a good handle on their patching of Microsoft Windows and Office vulnerabilities. However, they tend to overlook the forest for the trees. According to latest data from the National Vulnerability Database, approximately 85% of the reported vulnerabilities in 2015 have been in 3rd party applications like Java, Firefox, Acrobat Reader, Chrome, etc. Yet, due to lack of tools, resources and time, most organizations don’t have the time or the resources to keep their systems adequately up to date.
In this session, Duncan McAlynn, Senior Solution Specialist for HEAT Software, will demonstrate how quickly and easily you can become the IT hero by bringing this capability into your existing SCCM environment without introducing a new client, adding additional infrastructure or using separate consoles. Watch as Duncan demonstrates how to go from a barebones SCCM installation to patching 3rd party products in under an hour. Additionally, he’ll provide keen insights into how to use native SCCM features for monitoring and managing your organization’s security posture.

Device Guard and AppLocker: Better Together (Repeat Session)
Limited Capacity filling up

Breaking Free From MDT: How to just use ConfigMgr OSD
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

*** Late Session Addition so ConfigMgr Product Team Can Get Your Feedback ***

While there are many scenarios in which MDT thrives, most organizations can accomplish all their key OSD tasks by using the native ConfigMgr Operating System Deployment features. When should organizations use MDT versus ConfigMgr, is MDT-integration in ConfigMgr still necessary, and what are future potentials?

This session has two purposes:
1) Demonstrate how to use native ConfigMgr functionality for both building and deploying images, and;
2) Allow the ConfigMgr Product Team to gather feedback on additional MDT features to integrate into native OSD.

Come and share your experiences regardless if you've already made the shift to ConfigMgr OSD or are leveraging MDT.

Device Guard: How To Implement and Stay Out Of The News (Repeat Session)

MMS 2016 hAcKath0n Part 2 - Results!
